5 Steps to Small Business Spring Cleaning

April flowers bring May showers, along with the desire to clean out the old and bring in the new. While this is usually for our attics and closets, it should also apply to your small business.

Spring is a great time to review your business plan, check in on your books, and figure out how to streamline your processes to make this your most successful year yet!

Here are some pro tips to get you started:

1. Declutter your office space

Physically cleaning your office is a great place to start. Complete that filing you’ve been putting off or streamline by going digital! Dust, vacuum, and put away anything that you don’t use regularly. It’s an effective way to get you into a fresh state of mind, and will help customers feel more welcome when you meet them in your office. Plus, science has shown that clutter makes you more likely to procrastinate, so getting rid of it will help you get ready to forge ahead!

2. Organize your digital office

Much like your physical space, a disorganized inbox will only lead to confusion, missed emails, and potentially lost business. Now is a great time to put on a good playlist and purge your inbox. Get rid of junk emails, organize client emails into folders, and go through the old files on your desktop to get rid of any unnecessary documents.

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to set up a more organized digital filing system (specific folders on your desktop or in cloud-based folders) to make this part of the process easier in the years to come.

3. Review your business plan

Many of us create a business plan, then leave it on a back shelf to collect dust once the business gets started. But your business is always growing and changing, which means your business plan should, too. As you review it, reflect on what parts of your business have changed over the past year. Did you hire anyone new? Start using new vendors? Streamlined your processes or reduced services? Update your plan to reflect any and all changes to help guide you through the coming year.

4. Check your marketing

Just like your business plan needs updates, so does your marketing and branding. Marketing trends are always changing, as are new tactics that make it easier to connect with your choice demographic. Do some research on what market trends would work best for you, analyze last year’s data and results, and see if there are any new ways that social media could work for you.

5. Finesse your finances

Tax season is upon us, so there’s a good chance you’re already spending a lot of time with your financial records. Reviewing them can help you review your strengths, and help you forecast potential deficits that might come up in the future.

While you’re reviewing your files, digitize what you can, sort out receipts, and point out any anomalies to your accountant. Keeping your books organized will help prevent any future mishaps, and will make it easier to find solutions when the unexpected happens.

Spring cleaning might not sound like the most exciting thing to do, but getting organized now will make it easier when your busy season arrives.
